File management software

While device drivers have the responsibility for controlling the operation of their storage devices, the operation system must manage the data files. The operating system has specialised programs to perform copying and moving files, deleting and renaming them. Other programs can be added for other tasks like compressing files and archiving files.

File management software should, as a minimum, be able to:

  • work with individual files and folders as well as groups of files and folders
  • cut, copy and paste between folders and storage devices
  • delete files and folders
  • rename files and folders
  • search for files or folders on any device
