Printed and handwritten characters on paper is the most common non computer based collecting tool even with modern devices we still rely on paper based collection.
A typical example of a data entry type that can be easily transferred to a computer is a basic entry form. These can be read by scanners but also have to completed with more care as they can be misread when entered.

Structured form layouts are designed to reduce data entry errors.
